Modern Editing, Classic DNA

Vintage CASIO Legacy includes six standalone instruments, CZ, FZ, VZ, HZ, CTK, and RZ, each with its own character and history, plus an exclusive Multi instrument that transforms the suite into a unified performance workstation.
Together, they span the full breadth of CASIO’s synthesis legacy, Phase Distortion, Interactive Phase Distortion, Spectrum Dynamic synthesis, PCM sampling, and beyond.
Each instrument is wrapped in a streamlined interface and built with a consistent creative toolset including fast sound shaping, expressive performance controls, and deep editing when you want it.

Multi Mode

The Unified Groove Engine

Exclusive to the Vintage CASIO Legacy collection, the Multi module transforms the entire suite into a unified performance and production instrument. It combines the RZ drum engine with four independent synth slots, drawn from any of the Legacy instruments, each with its own arpeggiator and performance controls.
In addition to the per-instrument effects, Multi adds a dedicated bus effects section along with two configurable delays and reverbs, available as send effects from any of the four synth layers or the drum machine. The result is a modern groove workstation built from classic CASIO DNA, capable of everything from massive layered stacks to full real-time arrangement and song production.

Phase Distortion Pioneer

When CASIO introduced the CZ series in 1984, it redefined what affordable digital synthesis could sound like. At the heart of the line was Phase Distortion, CASIO’s proprietary synthesis method that manipulated the phase angle of a waveform to produce harmonically rich, animated timbres without the complexity of FM programming. The flagship CZ-1, released in 1986, represented the pinnacle of the series: full velocity and aftertouch sensitivity, 16-voice polyphony, and a sophisticated modulation architecture that gave players expressive control over sounds that ranged from glassy digital leads to thick, evolving pads. Sharp, dynamic, and unmistakably digital, the CZ series became a fixture in studios and stages throughout the late ‘80s.

The CZ module was deeply sampled to preserve every tonal nuance, including recordings captured with and without the original internal analog chorus. The result is an expressive recreation of Phase Distortion timbre with modern performance controls, perfect for brilliant keys, punchy basses, animated pads, and vivid digital textures that cut through a mix.

The Cult Sampler

Released in 1987, the FZ-1 was CASIO’s ambitious entry into the professional sampling arena. A 16-bit sampler with onboard filtering and envelopes, it offered serious sampling power at a fraction of the price of its competitors. Despite being overshadowed commercially, the FZ-1 earned a devoted following for its distinctive sonic character, warm converters, a gritty digital edge, and an unexpectedly rich palette of acoustic and synthetic textures that gave it a personality all its own.

FZ in Vintage CASIO Legacy

Vintage CASIO Legacy captures the FZ’s unique sampling aesthetic in depth, giving you a broad palette of “real” instruments and classic sampler color in a modern, playable format. It’s an ideal foundation for authentic vintage realism, lo-fi character instruments, and hybrid textures, and its content also feeds the drum side of the suite for cohesive CASIO tone across the collection.

Interactive Phase Distortion

The VZ series, launched in 1988, was CASIO’s answer to Yamaha’s FM synthesis dominance. Where FM relied on operator stacking, CASIO developed Interactive Phase Distortion (iPD), a sophisticated evolution of the CZ’s Phase Distortion engine that introduced module interaction, enabling complex, evolving, and harmonically rich textures that could rival the depth of FM while retaining a more intuitive architecture. The VZ-1 and VZ-10M became sought-after instruments for sound designers drawn to their ability to produce everything from lush, organic pads to metallic, bell-like tones with extraordinary harmonic complexity.

VZ in Vintage CASIO Legacy

This is the most comprehensive soundware ever dedicated to the VZ series, preserved through meticulous hardware sampling. The module delivers animated digital timbres, morphing harmonic structures, and richly layered tones that excel at modern sound design, especially when pushed through the suite’s modulation and effects.

Spectrum Dynamic Synthesis

The HZ-600, released in 1987, was built around CASIO’s Spectrum Dynamic synthesis, a unique approach that generated sound by blending and morphing between preset spectral snapshots. The result was a tonal range that moved effortlessly from precise digital clarity to warm, animated textures. With a built-in analog chorus that added lush dimension to its already distinctive voice, the HZ-600 offered a sound that was immediately recognizable and unlike anything else on the market.

HZ in Vintage CASIO Legacy

HZ in Vintage Casio Legacy captures the full character of the HZ-600 through deep multi-sampling of all waveforms alongside four selectable real-hardware chorus states, from completely dry to maximum depth. The result is a wide tonal spectrum that ranges from clean, precise digital tones to richly animated, chorus-drenched textures, faithfully recreated and ready for modern production.

The Hidden Gem

The CTK-1000 represents a rarely explored chapter in CASIO’s history. Often overlooked in favor of the company’s more celebrated synths, this unassuming instrument hides a distinctive voice beneath its modest exterior, charming digital textures and tones with a character that rewards those willing to dig deeper. It’s a true hidden gem, quietly waiting to be rediscovered.

Digital Drums with Character

The RZ-1, released in 1986, was CASIO’s first sampling drum machine and it quickly became a staple of electronic music production. With its punchy 8-bit PCM samples, onboard sampling capability, and a raw, direct sonic character, the RZ-1 delivered beats with a grit and immediacy that defined the sound of an era. Its lo-fi digital punch became a signature element in genres ranging from hip-hop to industrial, earning it a lasting place in drum machine history.

RZ in Vintage CASIO Legacy

RZ is presented as a dedicated drum machine instrument, designed for fast kit building, sequencing, and production-ready results. From crisp vintage hits to deeper, more modern drum content, it’s the rhythmic anchor of the collection, equally at home in retro productions, modern pop, electronic genres, and cinematic rhythm beds.
